After 15 years of going to UEC, I’ve found a new optometrist. I’ve endured the long waits and sometimes snarky front desk people on the 7th floor over the years because the exams were so thorough, but it’s the long wait between appointment times that has forced to to find a new provider for my family. This year, I called in mid-July for an appointment. The first one available was early September. After my appointment in September, the earliest they could see me was mid October. They cancelled that appointment and the next was mid November. Four months from my initial call and 2.5 months since my appointment and I still don’t have my contact lens. In that time, I was speaking at an event in October that I managed to get through with my glasses although I really preferred to have had the lens by then. I’m done. My prescription is strong. I can’t wait this long to get what I need in order to have clear vision.

I have been coming here since I was a little girl and have been impressed with the quality of care. However, this may be my last visit – I was taken on time at 12:30 for my appointment -it is now 3:09 and I am still waiting in the reception area for the doctor to return after she dilated my eyes an hour ago. This is crazy!!! Getting a routine eye exam should not be a 4 hour event. Something has to change.

My spouse saw Dr Adamczyk back in Aug and was advise by the intern that he needs to come back as one of the machine was down that they need to use for a test. He advise Dr and intern at the time that since he would need to come back for a service that was schedule to be done in Aug then he should not be paying a 2nd specialist copay to which both dr and intern acknowledge. After he went back to have service done 3 months later he was billed for a specialist copay of $50. After a followup we were advise that dr advise this was never discuss and that was not the case as no machine was down in Aug. I find it very unethical that she is denying the reason they advise him to come back.

If you are a person with low vision, I would avoid this place like the plague. Yesterday was the worst experience I had with eye care in my lifetime. As a person with albinism who is a finance and accounting professional, my goals were to receive a new reading prescription and to determine if there were any advances that would increase my productivity in the workplace. After being seen by an ophthalmologist in June, I was referred to UEC to have a low vision evaluation done to meet the above goals. The earliest appointment was not for another two plus months. When I arrived at the facility twenty minutes early, I was shocked to learn that my health insurance information was not verified. UEC noted my ID number incorrectly and never bothered to contact me prior to the appointment. They ended up having to re-enter my insurance information which did not allow for me to contact them to determine if these services are in fact covered. I continued with the appointment, nonetheless. After waiting another thirty minutes I went to protest and then two student residents came to take me to the examination room. It should be noted that this facility is substandard and hospital like in appearance. The examination room had florescent lighting which is not good for working with a patient with albinism as our eyes are very sensitive to light due to our lack of pigment so warm lighting is a necessity. UEC when it was located on Park Avenue was a very nice facility at one time. Low Vision services were managed by Dr. Bruce Rosenthal who works for The Lighthouse now. Although the students were very nice, it was obvious how the place has degraded since his departure many years ago. The technology used to examine me was circa 1970s which involved manual intervention which was not good given Covid-19 protocols. The room was poorly ventilated which made matters worse being in a mask. I expressed my dissatisfaction with the services provided and then met a smug doctor who defended the methods used but it was pointless to argue or show anger, but it was evident how disgusted I was. Given the impasse, I asked that they give me my prescription so I could get back to work. Amusingly, they did not believe in coordination with my ophthalmologist to have a picture of the patient they were getting. Regardless of whether it requires my consent or not to do this, they had more than two months to prepare. Instead they acted like a money hungry struggling medical practice that was clearly not interested in helping their patients. NEVER AGAIN!

12/7/22 – I want to add that this awful practice knowing that they provided poor service and an incorrect eye prescription sent a $50 medical bill to collections after two years. Everyone who has read my previous review should know that all they do is scrounge for insurance money rather than serve the public interest and It is truly shameful. Rest assured that they will never see a dime from me and I implore anyone with low vision to never step foot in that facility!

Front desk staff has attitude and entire office operations is ineffective. They wanted me to buy an eye mask, and instead of just grabbing it and letting me check out, they wanted me to make a SEPARATE appointment to get the mask and then check out a SECOND time …who has time for this??? My follow up appointment was scheduled for 2:45 and I had to wait over 45 minutes …why not just schedule me for 3:45 if that’s when you can see me??

Will not be returning.
