A collection of meaningful and deep semicolon tattoos and meanings
Tattoos have always been a way of self-expression. A semicolon tattoo is no exception. From social media to 13 Reasons Why, the popularity of this tiny symbol has exploded worldwide in the last few years. With people getting it inked on their wrists and ankles, the tattoo is more than a hype.
In this post, we share the stories behind it, along with some of the best of semicolon tattoos designs.
Meaning of a semicolon tattoo and the stories behind
Grammatically, a semicolon is used between two closely related sentences, creating a space without breaking them apart. And it also means with the choice of ending or continuing, the author chooses the latter.
When it comes to mental health, a semicolon is saying no to suicide or self-harm. It represents the victory of inner battles for people who suffer from depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.
Amy Bleuel and Project Semicolon
Amy Bleuel, the founder of Project Semicolon, is the one who extended the meaning of this punctuation to something more.
Being a victim of childhood abuse, bully and even rape, she had gone through unimaginable pain at an early age.
She lost her father to suicide when she was 18, and it took her years to heal from the pain and doubt about life.
Meeting her husband was a turning point for her to gain her power back. Taking the meaning behind the symbol, she started Project Semicolon hoping to raise awareness of mental health problems. Though she passed away in 2017, her legacy continues to inspire thousands in the same battle.
Semicolon tattoos, should you or should you not?
Getting a tattoo is a very personal process. The best tattoo design is something that connects with you and represents you on a personal level.
So is semicolon a good tattoo idea?
There might not be one perfect answer to everyone. But a semicolon tattoo is not exclusive to survivors of self-harm or suicide attempts. It is now, for many, a symbol of self-empowerment and mental strength.
Every one of us can be, and should be, an advocate of mental health. If a semicolon tattoo or the stories behind it relates to you, it may be a good idea. It will also work as a reminder that we are not alone in this fight.
